To get your store cited in AI search, make sure three things are true: AI search crawlers can reach your pages (OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT, PerplexityBot for Perplexity, Googlebot for AI Overviews), your pages are indexed and rank in normal search, and each page gives a clear, factual answer that an AI tool can quote and link to. Google says there are “no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode”, so solid SEO does most of the work. What changes is the type of page that gets cited: buying guides, comparisons, clear category pages and policy pages often matter as much as product pages.
This guide is for ecommerce store owners who want their own pages to appear as sources when shoppers ask ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google questions such as “best running shoes for flat feet” or “is merino wool good for summer”.
| AI search tool | Crawler to allow | What it needs from your store |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT search | OAI-SearchBot | Crawlable, indexed pages with clear answers |
| Perplexity | PerplexityBot (and Perplexity-User) | Crawlable pages, not blocked by firewall or CDN |
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | Googlebot | Indexed pages eligible for a snippet |
| Microsoft Copilot and Bing | Bingbot | Indexed in Bing; track in Bing Webmaster Tools |

Can AI search crawlers reach your store?
A page cannot be cited if the tool cannot fetch it. Check three places:
- robots.txt. OpenAI says OAI-SearchBot “is used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT’s search features” and that sites opted out of it “will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers” (OpenAI). GPTBot is a separate crawler used for model training, so you can block GPTBot and still allow OAI-SearchBot. Perplexity says PerplexityBot “is designed to surface and link websites in search results on Perplexity” and is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models (Perplexity).
- Firewalls and bot protection. Hosting security, CDN bot rules and anti-bot plugins can block AI crawlers even when robots.txt allows them. Google lists “Ensuring that crawling is allowed in robots.txt, and by any CDN or hosting infrastructure” among its best practices for AI features (Google Search Central).
- Indexing. For Google, a page “must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet” to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode (Google Search Central). Pages with nosnippet or noindex will not be used.
Which store pages get cited in AI answers?
AI tools answer questions, so they tend to cite pages that answer questions well. For most stores that means:
- Buying guides and comparisons (“how to choose a hiking backpack”, “linen vs cotton bedding”).
- Category or collection pages with a short, factual introduction and clear filters. Our guide to collection page SEO shows how to write them.
- Product pages with specs, materials, sizes and use cases written as text, not only in images.
- Policy and help pages for shipping times, returns, warranty and care, which answer the practical questions shoppers ask before buying.
Google also says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use a “query fan-out” technique, “issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources” (Google Search Central). A shopper’s single question may be broken into smaller ones about price, materials, sizes and delivery. Stores that answer those sub-questions on clear pages have more chances to be one of the links.
How should you write pages AI tools can cite?
There is no special format for AI search, but some writing habits make a page easier to quote accurately:
- Answer first. Put a one- or two-sentence answer at the top of a guide or section, then explain.
- Use specific facts. Sizes, materials, care instructions, delivery times and compatibility are easier to cite than vague claims such as “premium quality”.
- Use descriptive headings. Questions as headings (“Is this jacket waterproof?”) match the way people ask AI tools.
- Keep text and structured data in sync. Google advises “making sure your structured data matches the visible text on the page” (Google Search Central).
- Show who is behind the content. Google’s helpful content guidance asks site owners to make clear who created content and how (Google Search Central). A named author or team, real product testing notes and an About page all help.

You do not need special files for Google either. Google says: “You don’t need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in these features. There’s also no special schema.org structured data that you need to add” (Google Search Central). Time spent on clearer pages usually pays off more than time spent on new file formats.
Do product feeds and Merchant Center matter?
For shopping-style answers, product data often comes from feeds as well as web pages. Google’s AI features guide recommends checking that your Merchant Center and Business Profile information is up to date (Google Search Central). Shopify also notes that agentic storefronts such as ChatGPT and Copilot receive product data through Shopify Catalog, independently of your robots.txt (Shopify Help Center). Keep feeds accurate: price, stock, shipping and return details should match the product page.
Feeds help products appear; they do not replace citable pages. A guide or category page that answers the question is still what gets linked as a source.
How do you build authority AI tools trust?
AI answers lean on sources that search engines already trust. Mentions and links from respected sites in your niche, such as review sites, industry blogs, supplier pages and local press, help both rankings and citations. Avoid paid link schemes; Google treats them as spam (Google Search Central). Our guide to ecommerce link building strategies covers safer ways to earn links.
Consistency helps too. Use the same brand name, product names and key facts across your site, marketplaces and social profiles, so different sources agree with each other.
How do you measure AI search citations?
Measurement is still limited, but you have a few options:
- Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance. Launched in public preview in February 2026, it shows “the total number of citations that are displayed as sources in AI-generated answers”, plus cited pages and grounding queries (Microsoft Bing Blog).
- Google Search Console. Google says sites appearing in AI Overviews and AI Mode are reported in the Performance report, within the “Web” search type (Google Search Central). They are not shown separately, so watch impressions and clicks on question-style queries.
- Analytics referrals. In GA4 or Shopify Analytics, look for referral sessions from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and copilot.microsoft.com.
- Manual checks. Once a month, ask the tools the questions your customers ask and note which sources they cite.
What should you fix first?
Start with access, because nothing else matters if crawlers are blocked. Check robots.txt for OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Bingbot and Googlebot, then ask your host or CDN whether bot protection challenges them. Next, confirm your key guides, collections and policy pages are indexed in Google and Bing. Only then work on content: pick the ten questions customers ask most often, and make sure each one has a clear answer on a page you would be happy to see quoted.
Review progress every month. Citation lists change often, so a single check tells you little; a monthly log of which tools cite which pages shows whether the work is paying off.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get my store cited in ChatGPT?
Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and in your firewall, make sure your pages are indexed and rank in search, and publish clear, factual answers to the questions shoppers ask.
Should I block GPTBot?
That is a business choice. GPTBot is used for model training, while OAI-SearchBot is used for ChatGPT search. Blocking GPTBot does not stop OAI-SearchBot.
Do I need special schema or an llms.txt file to appear in AI Overviews?
No. Google says there are no additional requirements or special optimizations needed for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Standard structured data that matches visible text is still useful.
Which pages are most likely to be cited?
Buying guides, comparisons, clear category pages, detailed product pages and shipping or returns pages, because they answer specific shopper questions.
Can I track how often AI tools cite my store?
Partly. Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance shows citations in Microsoft AI answers, and analytics referrals show visits from ChatGPT and Perplexity. Other tools do not yet offer full citation reports.
Is AI search optimization different from SEO?
Mostly no. Crawlability, indexing, helpful content and authority drive both. The main difference is a stronger focus on clear, quotable answers and on crawlers beyond Googlebot.
Final thoughts
Getting your store cited in AI search starts with ordinary SEO done well: let the right crawlers in, get pages indexed and write clear answers backed by real facts. Then measure what you can and keep improving the pages shoppers ask about most.
