How much does Shopify SEO cost? Most stores that hire outside help pay between $500 and $5,000 per month. In Ahrefs’ survey of 439 SEO providers, 63% of businesses spent in that band, agencies averaged $3,209 per month and freelancers averaged $1,349. One-off audits or cleanup projects most often cost $2,501 to $5,000.
This guide is for Shopify and DTC store owners in the US, UK and Australia who are comparing quotes. It explains what moves the price, what each budget level usually buys, when cheap Shopify SEO is a trap, how to measure ROI, and how to get an accurate quote. Every market number below links to the page it came from.
Quick answer by situation:
- Small or new store, tight budget: do the basics yourself in the Shopify admin, or start with a starter retainer around $500 to $1,500 per month.
- Growing store in a competitive niche: plan for roughly $1,500 to $5,000 per month for technical work, content and links together.
- Large catalog, Shopify Plus or several countries: expect $5,000+ per month, usually on a custom scope.
- One-time fix: a project (audit plus implementation) instead of a retainer.
Note on the data: no large public survey covers Shopify-only SEO prices. The figures here come from general SEO pricing studies (Ahrefs) and a published agency price guide (WebFX). They are a benchmark, not a quote for your store. Shopify SEO pricing follows the same models: monthly retainer, hourly or per project.
How much does Shopify SEO cost per month?
The typical Shopify SEO monthly cost is $500 to $5,000, with a full survey range of $250 to $10,000 per month. The single most common retainer band is $501 to $1,000 per month, charged by 20.4% of the providers Ahrefs polled. Averages sit higher because a few large retainers pull them up.
| What was measured | Finding | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Typical monthly spend | $250 to $10,000; 63% spend $500 to $5,000 | Ahrefs (2024) |
| Most common retainer band | $501 to $1,000 per month (20.4% of providers) | Ahrefs (2024) |
| Average retainer: agency / consultant / freelancer | $3,209 / $3,250 / $1,348.63 per month | Ahrefs (2024) |
| US and Canada providers | 79.1% charge at least $1,001 per month | Ahrefs (2024) |
| Average local SEO retainer | $1,557 per month | Ahrefs (2024) |
| Typical retainer range | $1,000 to $5,000 per month | WebFX (2026) |
| Hourly consulting | Ahrefs average $111/hour; WebFX range $75 to $200/hour | Ahrefs, WebFX |
| Most common project fee | $2,501 to $5,000 (21.2% of providers) | Ahrefs (2024) |
Shopify SEO retainer price vs hourly vs project
A Shopify SEO retainer price buys ongoing work every month. Ahrefs found 78.2% of providers sell retainers, 48.9% sell one-off projects and 34.8% bill by the hour. WebFX puts retainers at $1,000 to $5,000 per month, hourly consulting at $75 to $200 and projects at $500 to $5,000.
- Retainer: best when you want steady growth: fixes, content and links every month.
- Project: best for a one-time audit, theme migration or cleanup of duplicate URLs.
- Hourly: best when your team does the work and needs expert guidance.
Shopify plan cost is separate from SEO cost
Your Shopify subscription is not an SEO budget. On Shopify’s pricing page (checked October 2026), yearly billing is $29/month for Basic, $79 for Grow and $299 for Advanced, and Plus starts at $2,300/month. Every plan includes hosting, a custom domain and SSL, and Shopify generates a sitemap.xml automatically. SEO cost is the work on top of that.
What changes the price of a Shopify SEO project?
Five things decide most Shopify SEO quotes. A provider who quotes without asking about them is guessing.
- Catalog size and structure. 50 products and 2,000 products with variants and filtered collections are different jobs. More URLs mean more templates, more duplicate-content risk and more pages to write.
- Current condition of the store. A clean theme needs less work than a store with app bloat, slow pages, broken redirects after a migration or thin product copy copied from suppliers.
- Competition in your niche. Supplements, fashion and beauty need more content and links than a narrow B2B niche. WebFX lists industry competition as a main cost factor.
- Markets and languages. Selling in the US, UK and Australia with separate domains or Shopify Markets adds international SEO work.
- Who does the implementation. A quote that includes writing and publishing the changes costs more than one that hands you a to-do list, but it gets done.
Provider type and experience matter too. Ahrefs found agencies charge about 138% more than freelancers, and providers in business 5 to 10 years average $3,648 per month versus $1,541 for those with two years or less.
Ecommerce SEO budget: a simple way to size yours
There is no official formula for an ecommerce SEO budget. A practical method:
- Write down your average order value, gross margin and repeat-purchase rate.
- Check current organic revenue in Shopify Analytics or GA4, and impressions in Google Search Console.
- Ask: how many extra organic orders per month would cover the fee? If a $1,500/month retainer needs 30 extra orders at $50 gross profit each, decide whether that is realistic for your traffic.
- Commit for at least six months before judging. WebFX says SEO typically takes 3 to 6 months to show meaningful results.
What do you get at each budget level?
Here are Shopify SEO packages compared by budget. Scope varies by provider, so use this to check whether a quote is in a sensible range for what it promises.
| Budget level | Typical monthly cost | What it usually covers | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| DIY | Your time plus tools | Titles, meta descriptions, alt text and URLs in the Shopify admin; sitemap submitted to Search Console | New stores with few products |
| Starter retainer | About $500 to $1,500 | Audit, priority technical fixes, collection and product page optimization, light content, monthly report | Small and growing stores |
| Growth retainer | About $1,500 to $5,000 | Ongoing technical upkeep, content plan and new pages, digital PR or link building, revenue reporting | Competitive niches, scaling DTC brands |
| Large store / Plus | $5,000+ | Large catalogs, migrations, international SEO, dedicated team, custom scope | Shopify Plus, multi-market brands |
| One-time project | Most often $2,501 to $5,000 | Audit plus fixes, theme migration, duplicate URL cleanup | Stores with a specific problem |
What you can do yourself for $0
Shopify gives you the basic SEO fields for free. The Shopify Help Center says to put keywords in page titles, meta descriptions, alt text and body content, keep titles at 60 characters or fewer, and give blog posts at least 500 words. Shopify also creates your sitemap.xml so you can submit it in Search Console.

Is cheap Shopify SEO ever worth it?
Cheap Shopify SEO is worth it only when the scope is small and clearly defined, such as a one-time fix of titles and meta descriptions on a small store. A very low-cost monthly “SEO package” that promises rankings across a whole store usually cannot cover real work at those hours.
Google’s own advice on hiring an SEO is blunt: “No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google.” It warns against providers who claim a “special relationship” with Google or are secretive about what they do.
Red flags in cheap offers:
- Guaranteed #1 rankings or guaranteed traffic numbers.
- Hundreds of backlinks per month for a low flat fee. Google’s spam policies list buying links and automated links as link spam.
- No list of deliverables, or reports that show only rankings for keywords nobody searches.
- Bulk AI product descriptions published with no editing. Google’s spam policies cover scaled content made mainly to rank.
- Long lock-in contracts with no exit clause, or the provider keeping ownership of your content.
How do you measure ROI on Shopify SEO?
Measure Shopify SEO ROI as organic revenue gained minus SEO cost, divided by SEO cost, using gross profit rather than sales where you can. Track it monthly against a baseline taken before work starts.
- Organic sessions and revenue: GA4 or Shopify Analytics, filtered to organic search.
- Impressions, clicks and positions: Google Search Console, by collection and product page.
- Non-brand growth: clicks on queries that do not include your brand name show real new demand.
- Conversion rate of organic traffic: more traffic is only useful if it buys.
- Leading indicators: indexed pages, fixed errors, and new pages ranking in the top 20.
Ask any provider: “What kind of results do you expect to see, and in what timeframe? How do you measure your success?” Those are two of the questions Google suggests.
How do you get an accurate quote for your store?
You get an accurate Shopify SEO quote by sharing data, not just a URL. Before calls, prepare:
- Store URL, Shopify plan and theme, and the number of products, collections and markets.
- Read access to Google Search Console and GA4 (Google advises giving an SEO read access only at the start).
- Your top revenue collections and the products with the best margin.
- Competitors you lose to in Google, and any recent migration or traffic drop.
- Your monthly budget range, so the provider can scope to it.
Then compare quotes on scope, not price alone: hours or deliverables per month, who implements, how results are reported, minimum term, and who owns the work.
