How Much Does Local SEO Cost? 2026 Pricing for Small Businesses

How much does local SEO cost in 2026: free Google Business Profile, DIY software and average freelancer and agency prices

Table of Contents

How much does local SEO cost? Most small businesses that hire help pay somewhere between a few hundred and a few thousand dollars per month. In Ahrefs’ survey of 439 SEO providers, those serving local markets charged $1,557 per month on average, with local agencies around $1,819 and local freelancers around $1,150. Do-it-yourself software starts at about $41 per month, and setting up a Google Business Profile costs nothing.

This guide is for small local business owners (clinics, trades, restaurants, shops and service firms) who want to know what a fair local SEO budget looks like before talking to an agency. It uses published price data only, explains what each price level usually buys, and shows how to work out whether the spend can pay for itself.

How much does local SEO cost per month?

The most useful benchmark is the Ahrefs SEO pricing survey: providers that serve local markets charged $1,557.08 per month on average, against $3,473.74 for providers serving the worldwide market. Ahrefs puts local agencies at about $1,819 per month and local freelancers at about $1,150, and says the most common hourly rate for local SEO is $75 to $100.

Semrush, summarizing several studies, puts typical local SEO pricing at $100 to $3,000 per month, or $50 to $100 per hour (Semrush). Ahrefs also found that providers serving local markets charged $93.89 per hour and $5,723.53 per one-off project on average.

Local SEO monthly price by option

  • DIY: your time plus optional software. BrightLocal’s plans for one location cost $41 (Track), $54 (Manage) or $65 (Grow) per month billed monthly, or $31 to $49 per month billed annually (BrightLocal pricing).
  • Freelancer: around $1,150 per month on average for local work.
  • Productized managed service: BrightLocal’s managed local SEO costs “$1299/month (per location)”, with a 12-month contract (BrightLocal Help Center).
  • Agency: around $1,819 per month on average for local work, more for multi-location businesses or very competitive cities.

What is included at each price level?

Price levels are not standard across the industry, so treat the bands below as a guide to compare quotes, not a price list. They group the published figures above into three levels of work. For context, Ahrefs found $501 to $1,000 per month is the most popular monthly retainer band (20.4% of providers), and 42.8% of providers charge between $501 and $2,000 per month.

Whatever the level, a few things should never be extra: an initial audit, a written plan, access to your own data, and a record of every change. The Google Business Profile itself is free: Google says you can manage how your business shows up on Maps and Search “at no charge” (Business Profile Help). You pay for the work, not the listing.

Why do some agencies charge $99 and others $2,000?

The difference is mostly hours and scope. At the most common local SEO hourly rate Ahrefs reports, $75 to $100 per hour, a $99 monthly package buys roughly one hour of skilled work. A $2,000 monthly retainer buys around 20 to 27 hours. Neither is wrong; they are different products.

  • What $99 a month can buy: software access, automated listing updates, scheduled profile posts and a dashboard. Useful, but not strategy, content or link building.
  • What $1,000 to $2,000 a month can buy: a person who studies your market, improves your service and location pages, builds local links and reviews your call and lead data every month.

Cheap local SEO risks to watch for

Checklist of eight local SEO pricing red flags, including ranking guarantees, fake reviews and keyword-stuffed business names
Eight red flags in local SEO offers. Based on Google Business Profile guidelines, Maps contribution policy and Google Search Central.
  • Ranking guarantees. Google says “No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google” (Google Search Central), and for Maps: “There’s no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google” (Business Profile Help).
  • Fake or paid reviews. Google’s Maps policy does not allow offering “incentives – such as payment, discounts, free goods and/or services – in exchange for posting any review” (Maps content policy). An agency that “provides reviews” puts your profile at risk.
  • Keyword-stuffed business names. Google says your name “should reflect your business’s real-world name” (Business Profile guidelines). Adding “Best Plumber Dallas” to the name breaks the rules.
  • No access, no reports. If you do not own your profile, website and analytics logins, you cannot leave cleanly.
  • Long contracts with vague deliverables. A 12-month term can be reasonable, as BrightLocal openly states, but only with a clear monthly scope.

Google ranks local results “mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity” (Google). Good local SEO improves relevance and popularity through accurate information, real reviews and helpful pages. No package can change your distance from the searcher.

How long before local SEO pays for itself?

Expect months, not weeks. BrightLocal, which sells managed local SEO, says it expects “meaningful growth in results (clicks, calls, leads) within 4-6 months” and asks customers for a 12-month commitment. Use that as a reasonable outside view, not a promise.

To judge local SEO return on investment, work out how many extra customers cover the monthly fee:

Break-even customers per month = monthly SEO fee ÷ gross profit per new customer

Example with made-up numbers: if a plan costs $1,200 per month and each new customer brings $300 in gross profit, you need four extra customers a month to break even. A dentist or law firm with high customer value may break even on one or two new clients; a café with low margins needs far more. If the number of customers needed looks unrealistic for your area, a smaller scope or DIY is the better choice.

  • Track calls and direction requests in your Business Profile performance data.
  • Track form leads and bookings from organic search in Google Analytics.
  • Ask new customers how they found you and note it in your booking system.

How can you get an accurate quote?

A quote is only as accurate as the information behind it. Before you ask anyone for a price, prepare:

  • your number of locations and the towns or areas you serve;
  • your main services and which ones bring the most profit;
  • access to your Google Business Profile, website and, if possible, Search Console and Analytics;
  • your top three local competitors;
  • what you have already done (citations, reviews, past agencies).

Then ask every provider the same questions: what exactly is delivered each month, who does the work, how results are reported, what the contract length and notice period are, and what happens to your accounts if you leave. Compare quotes on those answers, not on the headline price.

Frequently asked questions

How much does local SEO cost for a small business?

Published averages put it at about $1,150 per month for freelancers and $1,819 for agencies (Ahrefs), with a wider range of $100 to $3,000 per month across studies. DIY software starts around $41 per month.

Is Google Business Profile free?

Yes. Google says you can manage how your business appears on Maps and Search at no charge. You only pay if you hire someone to manage it.

Is a $99 local SEO package worth it?

It can be worth it for software, listings and basic profile upkeep. At $75 to $100 per hour, it does not buy much strategy, content or link building.

Can I pay Google for a better Maps ranking?

No. Google says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Google Ads can place you in ad slots, but that is advertising, not SEO.

How long does local SEO take to show results?

Most providers talk in months. BrightLocal expects meaningful growth in four to six months; competitive cities can take longer.

Should I sign a 12-month local SEO contract?

Only if the monthly deliverables are written down, you keep ownership of your accounts and there is a clear notice period.

Final thoughts

So, how much does local SEO cost? For most small businesses, a realistic range is from free DIY with a little software up to about $1,000 to $2,000 per month for ongoing professional work, with more for competitive cities and multiple locations. Work out your break-even number first, then choose the smallest scope that can realistically reach it.
